Polished Neolithic Axe Head

Location: ZORITA DE LOS CANES — SPAIN

Origin: Uncovered when excavating in the chapel in the cemetery at Zorita Castle.

Significance: This enigmatic piece of fibrolite is a polished axe from the Neolithic period. Called lightning stones by the Romans, these pieces were greatly prized, as they were believed to foretell good fortune. When a Roman found one, they often placed it under their pillow. Finding such an item at Zorita is interesting. Would the prior of Zorita be interested in such a superstitious item?
